President's Message

Over the years, I have often been deeply indebted to long time member John Raitt, a descendant of Thomas Hale of Newbury. John formerly lived in NH, and has done much research for his Thomas Hale family, and often when I reach a blank wall, I will send a call for help and John will come to the rescue with the needed information.

A few years ago, John, gave me a list of towns in New Hampshire that have Hale genealogies in their history and I am finally getting around to sharing this information with you.
The following towns in NH have varying levels of Hale genealogies in their histories – Barrington, Boscawen, Chesterfield, Fitzwilliam, Goffstown, Hampstead, Haverhill, Henniker, Hopkinton, Jaffery, Keene, Langdon, Littleton, Merrimack, Newport, Orford, Richmond, Ringe, Rochester, Salisbury, Sullivan, Surry, Swanzey, Troy and Walpole – There may well be histories of Hale’s in other towns as well.

The Rindge list is mostly of the Thomas line, while Barrington and Rochester are mostly from the Robert line. If any of you have information regarding any of these town histories, or could determine which families are involved it could be a great asset to our genealogical research.

I recently made contact with Mr. Gilbert (Buzz) Hale, a descendant of Samuel Hale who settled in Wethersfield/Glastonbury Connecticut in 1637.

Buzz is willing to search his database of Samuel Descendants to help Hale’s searching for unknown ancestors. Buzz has also shared a bit of his family history, a story, and a picture of some treasured family items from the Civil War. The story, and the picture reminded me of a family item, also from the Civil War. Perhaps our Great Grandfathers may have met or seen each other in that tumultuous period. Do any of you have pictures and or stories of your family history to share.

Secretary/Treasurer Mumbles
It has been a long cold winter here in Conway. I hope the rest of you have all been well.
I sort of erred in the last newsletter by putting in the member renewal forms. Several members have sent dues, thinking that I was sending them for their dues, while I was actually asking members to try and recruit new members.
I am enclosing a separate sheet for new membership recruiting purposes. It has an explanation of the recruitment program we are proposing.
We have gotten a few new members since the last newsletter, and this is very encouraging to us. As Fred mentioned before, our new member has worked on a web site for the Hale Family Association. We appreciate Bob's work on this and hope it will become beneficial to those with computers to access and get updates and information from the various sites that will be available.
As your Treasurer, with help from our member at large, I have been setting up a schedule of available finances according to dues payments and membership endings so as to know how much of our finances will be available for the current year. Thank you Betsy

Family History – Gilbert (Buzz) Hale

Hi Fred, The HFA web site sounds like it could bring out stories of our ancestors. I have one that may be of interest !

Francis Hale was my great grandfather. He fought in the Civil War from July 1862 to July 1863. He fought in several battles in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. On the evening preceding a deadly battle Francis, who was only 19 years old, went down to a stream that separated the Rebels from the Yanks. Surprisingly he came upon a young southern soldier who was washing up in the stream. The Reb noticed that Francis had a hunk of chewing tobacco in his breast pocket. He asked Francis if he would part with some of that plug of tobacco.

Photo of Francis Hale RazorFrancis asked if he had anything to trade. He said the only thing he had was his straight razor. Francis accepted. The Rebel soldier said he thought that the next day's battle would be devastating and that he might not need the razor anyway. The next day both sides threw their columns of men at each other in a ferocious battle.

Francis survived with only minor injuries. When the battle was over, the Union troops surveyed the carnage and casualties.

It was during this survey that Francis thought he saw a dead Rebel soldier covered with blood that looked like the Rebel soldier that he traded the plug of chewing tobacco the night before. The Reb would never need the straight razor again as he had surmised.

Regards,    Buzz

P.S. I have that straight razor in my Hale ancestry cabinet.

Lorenzo Truman Hale Knife

Photo of Lorenzo Truman KnifeThis Knife was found between the ceiling and 2nd floor about 1946 when some remodeling was being done on our family home in Conway, NH. Dad had passed on in 1941, and was closing in a chimney on the 2nd floor when I found the Knife, A great Uncle confirmed that the knife belonged to Lorenzo T. Hale, his father, and that my Great Grandfather. Lorenzo had used the knife in the Civil War.

Looking at the instrument, it raises questions for me, do you need a good buddy to hold the meat with his fork, while you cut? or do we throw caution to the winds and use field expediency?

Thanks Buzz for reminding me of this part of my history –

Fred Hale.

Arthur Hale met a Mr. Robert Hale recently, and was talking with him about the Association, and sent him a copy of the latest newsletter and invited him to join the Association. What a great match; Bob volunteered to set up an Association Web Site, and is currently in the process of training us while building the site. Look it over, and please forward your comments and suggestions.

Genealogy
Some of our Hale Association members and their line to Robert Hale of Charleston. We believe that Robert was descended from Sir Charles Hale & Hannah Honywood of Canterbury - no proof as yet.

When you read the lineage for cousin Lucy McLeod (see below), you will see that she is a direct descendant of Major Samuel Hale as well as Samuel's brother Jon Hale, which she states, makes her a cousin to her own children - in fact, she is a cousin to her own parents, and perhaps is her own cousin. Lucy was kind enough to send us a copy of the famous poem "I Am My Own Granddad" which is after the geniology section (Click here to go directly to it); hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

I am my own Grandpa...
By Dwight B. Latham  And Moe Jaffe

Many many years ago,
When I was twenty three,
I got married to a widow
Who was pretty as could be.

This widow had a grown-up daughter
Who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her,
And soon the two were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother,
For she was my father's wife.

To complicate the matters worse,
Although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad.
And so became my uncle,
Though it made me very sad.

For if he was my uncle,
Then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother.

Father's wife then had a son,
Who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson,
For he was my daughter's son.

My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue.
Because, although she is my wife,
She's my grandmother, too.

If my wife is my grandmother,
Then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it,
It simply drives me wild.

For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw.
As the husband of my grandmother,
I am my own grandpa!
